Winner's Tutorial, Challenge #84, by pensnest

In which this becomes this .

Icon was created in PS CS3 on a Mac, but provided you can do a Gaussian Blur somehow I don't think there is anything untranslatable involved.

I have to admit I was a bit stymied by the source picture at first, but once I got going I had to make myself stop. Lots of fun.

For this icon, I was thinking 'pinkish' in a vague way. So I began with the crop,

duplicated it twice, set the first new layer to Screen and the next to Multiply, then added a Colour Fill layer of f0c9c3, a nice rosy pink, set to Soft Light.

Time for a Merge layer, (New Layer, cmd+alt+shift+E), to which I applied a Gaussian Blur of 4.7 (Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur). I duplicated this, set the lower one to Multiply (with the figure masked off roughly) and the upper one to Screen, which gives that glow to the figure.

At some point, and I cannot now tell which point, I decided to get rid of the light just above her head, so I put in a new layer under the Colour Fill and painted it out using an adjacent background colour. I also masked it off on the Screen Gaussian Blur layer.

I didn't want the background quite so uniform, so I put in this texture (made by me) below the two Gaussian Blurred layers, and set it to Screen.

Except then, of course, it was a bit too light and swishy (or, possibly, I just changed my mind), so I added another texture of mine, twice, with one layer on Screen 47% and the other on Overlay 100%.

I thought quite hard about deleting the scattery texture, but in the end I think it adds a little something that I like.

Here it is with the new layer:
Scattery texture unchecked:
With new Soft Light layer:

Just to sharpen it up a little and increase the drama, I brought a fresh copy of the base layer up to the top, and set it to Soft Light at 50%.

For the text, I 'cheated', as I have a lovely set of fairy tale brushes from [profile] amethystia, of which this is one. The colour is 9e3538, a red picked up from the icon somewhere, and it is set on Normal at 100%.

Here's the Layers palette:
